Movement Reformation Happens
Born Schaffhausen, 1445
Died Strasbourg, 1510
Significance Geiler was a Catholic theologian who taught at the University of Freiburg, but he eventually became the people's priest in Strasbourg where he served for thirty-two years. Through his sermons, preached in German, he denounced the moral laxity of both the clergy and laity. In a Strasbourg synod called in 1482 to address issues of reform, Geiler was the official preacher.
