Bernard Rothmann

Movement Radical Reformation
Born Stadtlohn, 1495 abt
Died Munster, 1535
Significance Rothmann was one of the leaders in Münster. He was appointed as pastor of St. Lambert Church in Münster in 1532. He provided the theological basis for the radical reformation in Münster. Soon, Rothmann and the other leaders, Jan of Leiden and Jan Matthijs, were seen as a threat to the city and in 1534 the city was taken by Catholic forces. Because of the "fanaticism" of the leaders in Münster, persecution of anabaptists intensified after they were overthrown.
